| When you visit St. Lawrence Orthodox Christian Church, chances are one
of the first things you'll notice will be the music. If you visit
several times, you may have occasion to notice that the choir
producing this beautiful sound is not always led by the same person.
St. Lawrence Church is blessed with not one, but two highly skilled
and dedicated choir directors-Alice Hughes and Anne Schoepp. |

Alice and Anne may look like Mutt and Jeff (Anne is about seven inches
taller than Alice), and of course they are two separate people with
distinct personalities. But when it comes to leading the choir, they
are fully united in purpose, and their individual strengths come
together to make one powerhouse of musical talent, energy, and
commitment.

Alice holds a B. Mus. degree in Choral Music Education from the
Conservatory of Music at the University of the Pacific, Stockton,
California. She has served as a church choir director and voice
teacher for 20 years, and for eight years has directed the St.
Lawrence children's choir. Anne Schoepp holds a B.A. in Music from
Stanford University and has directed an Orthodox choir for 17 years.
She teaches music privately and at St. Lawrence Academy. |
Together, Alice and Anne founded the national organization PSALM (Pan-Orthodox Society
for the Advancement of
Liturgical Music), in which they now serve as board members and
editors of PSALM Notes; established the West Coast Liturgical Singing
Seminar, now in its sixth year; and have produced and/or directed four
recordings for Seraphim Six Productions. They both arrange and compose
liturgical music as well.
In addition to all this, Anne and Alice are busy wives and mothers
(Alice has two children, Anne has five), and Alice serves as COO of
her husband's business. Still, they keep the energy flowing that keeps
the choir on its toes. With cheerful humor, unfailingly high standards
of musicianship, and inspiring dedication to the liturgical life of
the Church, they lead the choir to give its all in the service of God
through music.
